Preparation
- Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C) and remove giblets from the turkey. Pat the turkey dry with paper towels to ensure crispy skin.
- In a small bowl, combine softened butter, chopped rosemary, thyme, minced garlic, salt, and pepper to create a fragrant herb butter.
- Loosen the turkey skin over the breast and thighs, then rub half of the herb butter underneath. Spread the remaining butter generously over the entire turkey skin.
- Place the lemon halves and onion quarters into the turkey cavity. Tie the drumsticks together with kitchen twine and tuck the wing tips under the body.
Roasting
- Place the turkey on a rack in a large roasting pan and pour chicken broth into the bottom of the pan.
- Roast for 30 minutes at 450°F (230°C) until golden brown. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue roasting for 3.5 hours, or until a meat thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh reads 165°F (74°C).
- Baste the turkey every 30-45 minutes with the pan juices to keep it moist and flavorful.
- If the turkey skin starts to get too dark, cover it loosely with aluminum foil.
Resting
- Once cooked, remove the turkey from the oven and transfer it to a large cutting board. Tent it loosely with aluminum foil and let it rest for at least 20-30 minutes before carving.
Notes
For extra flavor, consider brining the turkey overnight before roasting. This will help keep the meat even juicier. If you don't have fresh herbs, you can substitute with dried herbs, using about one-third of the fresh herb amount. Always ensure the internal temperature reaches 165°F for food safety. The resting period is crucial for juicy meat, so don't skip it!
