Ingredients

Pie Crust
  • 1 package refrigerated pie crusts (2 count)
Filling
  • 6 apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or a mix), peeled, cored, and sliced (about 6 cups)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • teaspoon ground cloves
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter cut into small pieces
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

Equipment

  • 9-inch pie plate
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Baking sheet
  • Paring knife
  • Cutting board

Method

Preparation
  1. Unroll one pie crust and gently fit it into a 9-inch pie plate, then trim the edges to fit.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and lemon juice; toss gently to coat.
Assembly and Baking
  1. Pour the apple filling into the prepared pie crust, mounding it slightly in the center, and dot the top with butter pieces.
  2. Unroll the second pie crust, place it over the filling, then trim and crimp the edges together to seal; cut several slits in the top for steam to escape.
  3. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C), place the pie on a baking sheet, and bake for 15 minutes.
  4. Reduce oven temperature to 375°F (190°C) and continue baking for 35-45 minutes until golden brown and bubbly, covering edges with foil if needed.
Serving
  1. Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool completely on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

Notes

For a truly golden crust, brush the top with an egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water) before baking. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for an extra treat.
