Baking the Cake
- Prepare the red velvet cake mix according to package directions, adding eggs, oil, and water.
- Bake in an 8-inch round pan for approximately 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely.
Making the Frosting
- In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.
- Gradually add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time, until fully incorporated and smooth.
- Stir in the vanilla extract. Take half of the frosting and mix it with a few drops of green food coloring to create a "leafy" effect.
Assembling the "Seedling" Cake
- Once the cake is cool, spread the white cream cheese frosting over the top and sides of the cake. This will be your "pot" or "soil" base.
- Sprinkle the crushed chocolate wafers or Oreos evenly over the top of the white frosting to mimic rich soil.
- Carefully pipe or spread the green frosting in a small mound in the center of the "soil" to create a "seedling" shape. This represents the emerging plant.
- Decorate the green seedling with red and gold edible glitter, symbolizing the festive Juneteenth colors. Place a small toy shovel next to the cake for a playful touch.
Notes
This cake is a playful and symbolic representation of growth and celebration for Juneteenth. The "growing" aspect refers to the visual presentation rather than actual plant growth. Adjust food coloring and glitter amounts to achieve desired vibrancy.
