- Rinse the rice under cold water until the water runs clear, then set it aside to drain.
- In a medium saucepan, melt butter or heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 3-5 minutes, then stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
- Add the rinsed rice to the saucepan, stirring well to coat each grain with the butter or oil. Pour in the chicken or vegetable broth, add salt and pepper, and bring the mixture to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan tightly, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until all the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is tender. Remove from heat and let it rest, covered, for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork and serving.
Notes
For extra flavor, you can toast the rice before adding the broth. Consider adding a bay leaf or a pinch of saffron for a more aromatic pilaf. Feel free to substitute chicken broth with vegetable broth for a vegetarian option.
