Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into 1-inch cubes, then boil them in a large pot of salted water until tender, which usually takes 15-20 minutes.
- Drain the sweet potatoes and mash them in a large bowl, then add butter, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt, mixing until smooth and well combined.
Baking
- Spread the sweet potato mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish.
- If desired, sprinkle chopped pecans over the sweet potato mixture and/or top with marshmallows.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the casserole is heated through and the topping is golden brown (if using marshmallows, bake until they are puffed and lightly browned).
Notes
For extra flavor, add a splash of vanilla extract to the sweet potato mixture. You can also prepare this casserole ahead of time and refrigerate it before baking. Just add an extra 10-15 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold.
