Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons of flour, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg, and lemon juice; toss well to coat the apples evenly.
- Transfer the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer.
Making the topping
- In another bowl, whisk together 1 cup of flour, brown sugar, oats, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing until moist crumbs form.
Baking
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the apple filling in the baking dish.
- Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling.
- Let the apple crisp cool slightly before serving; it’s delicious on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
For best results, use a mix of sweet and tart apples like Granny Smith and Fuji. You can also add a handful of chopped nuts to the topping for extra crunch.
